Mining & Research

Comprehensive reclamation research lays the foundation for successful restored mined land.

At Tannas Conservation Services, we study how land recovers, using natural methods to reintegrate native species and restore lost habitats. Our work helps industrial partners implement reliable strategies to reform disturbed areas into healthy, self-sustaining ecosystems.

Our team has extensive experience working with the mining industry across Canada on projects from Ontario through to BC and up to the Arctic Ocean. Our research programs cover new weed control techniques, prescribed burns, reclamation techniques, and water remediation. Our team actively conducts research with NGOs, Government Agencies, Universities, First Nations, and Industry leaders.

A MULTI-PHASE APPROACH

1

Reclamation Research

Reclamation Research

Effective reclamation starts with understanding how ecosystems recover. Our team researches, refines and develops effective strategies for revegetation, soil stabilization and ecosystem restoration.

2

Reclamation Planning

Reclamation Planning

Every site presents unique challenges. We develop specific reclamation plans, including mine closure strategies, soil and vegetation assessments and progressive revegetation techniques.

3

Habitat Restoration

Habitat Restoration

Mining operations disrupt critical habitats. Therefore, we must work to restore self-sustaining landscapes that support biodiversity and species at risk. Our approach employs innovative ecology to ensure that reclaimed areas remain productive and resilient.

FLOATING ISLANDS & PHYTO-REMEDIATION

Water contamination is a major challenge in mining reclamation. Tannas Conservation Services Ltd., in partnership with GP Restoration Solutions Inc., has developed North Star Floating Islands, an innovative, passive water treatment solution.

Our floating islands filter heavy metals, selenium, and excess nutrients from stormwater and mine settling ponds. Using native wetland plants, they provide a long-term, low-maintenance solution that avoids introducing plastics or harmful byproducts into the environment.

Canadian Climate

Designed for Canadian Climates

Our floating islands are adapted to withstand freezing temperatures and harsh conditions.

We’ve worked to pair the right plant species with the specific habitat, growing conditions and pollutants in question to ensure the most passive and cost-effective decontamination strategy.

Species Database

Using research conducted with Olds College, we have developed a database of native wetland plants and their ability to filter various contaminants.

This database allows us to identify the most effective native plant species for removing specific pollutants from water.

Proven Applications in Mining and Industry

Our floating islands are already in use across Western Canada for:

  • Selenium remediation in mining operations
  • Heavy metal and nutrient removal in stormwater ponds
  • Water treatment in agricultural settling ponds and dugouts
